  19. Introduction

  21. You can customise the way in which PipeDream 4 operates through two 
  22. different mechanisms.  Nearly all document production packages have two 
  23. such mechanisms.  In PipeDream 4 the first set of custom features is 
  24. available through the Choices menu (in some other packages this is 
  25. called Preferences) and these choices affect the way in which PipeDream 
  26. operates with all documents.  The second mechanism allows you to create 
  27. separate proforma for different types of documents; in PipeDream (and 
  28. Fireworkz) this second mechanism is the facility to create a large 
  29. range of Templates.

  31. You will find an article on templates in the directory Templates1.  I 
  32. suggest that you read the article in this directory first and follow 
  33. that by reading the article in the Templates1 directory.

  36. Getting Started

  38. Install PipeDream on the icon bar, place the pointer over the icon and 
  39. click the mouse menu (middle) button.  The pop-up menu which appears 
  40. has five items one of which is Choices and, just below Choices is the 
  41. Save Choices option.  If you run the pointer through Choices the 
  42. Choices pop-up menu will appear.  You can now change any (or all) of 
  43. the features appearing on this Choices menu.

  46. Finishing

  48. Yes!  I know we haven't done much yet but it's always as well to know 
  49. where we're going to finish up otherwise we might not get there!  When 
  50. you have made your choices from the Choices menu you can click the 
  51. select (left) mouse button on Save Choices and, from now on, whenever 
  52. PipeDream 4 is loaded to the icon bar your choices will be applied to 
  53. the way in which PipeDream operates with every document.

  56. The Choices File
  57.  
  58. Have a look in the !PipeDream directory.  By the way, to open a 
  59. directory which starts with a ! (what Acorn call an Application and 
  60. what I think should be called a package) you must hold down the <Shift> 
  61. key as you double click (the select button) on it.
  62.  
  63. In the !PipeDream directory you'll find a file called [Choices] having 
  64. a PipeDream filetype.  If you double click on it it will simply load 
  65. into PipeDream and you'll be no better off.  To see what's inside it 
  66. you need to hold down the <Shift> key and then double click.  The file 
  67. will load into Edit and you will see a file containing perhaps a couple 
  68. of dozen rows each starting with a %PC% character.
  69.  
  70. Unless you want to do something very special you probably don't need to 
  71. know what these cryptic %PC% so called 'constructs' mean.  If you do need 
  72. to know then you can do some research by looking at the section headed 
  73. PipeDream File Format which starts on page 197 of the PipeDream 4 
  74. Reference Guide.  Pages 199 to 201 contain a brief description of each 
  75. of the %PC% constructs.

  78. Hidden Choices
  79.  
  80. Perhaps you might have noticed that there are some constructs which 
  81. appear in your [Choices] file which are not available from the Choices 
  82. menu.  An example in my own [Choices] file I find the construct 
  83. %PC%OP%PC%PDHPJet.  This construct is in two parts, %PC%OP%PC%PD followed by HPJet.  
  84. The PD refers to the choice of (PipeDream) printer driver; in my case 
  85. HPJet is my default choice.  Those constructs which are not available 
  86. from the Choices menu are derived from whatever document is the 
  87. currently selected document (the PipeDream document which is on screen) 
  88. at the time when the Choices were saved.

  90. If you've followed me this far then you'll realise that the [Choices] 
  91. file contains information derived from two sources namely the Choices 
  92. menu and a typical document.

  95. The Choices Menu
  96.  
  97. Have another look at the Choices menu.  My own choice of Choices is to 
  98. turn on all the following: Short menus, Auto check, Auto recalc (short 
  99. for Auto recalculation), Auto chart update and Insert.  I leave the 
  100. Colours as their default but I do set the Paste depth at 50 instead of 
  101. the default value of 10.

  103. If you run your pointer through Dictionaries you may not have any 
  104. opened!  I have four.  These are the Master dictionary and three other 
  105. specialist dictionaries.  You can not choose which of your dictionaries 
  106. are opened from the Choices menu!  Read on.

  109. The Default Document
  110.  
  111. Click the mouse Select (left) button on the installed (on the icon bar) 
  112. PipeDream icon and a blank document will open.  In the correspondence I 
  113. receive from you I've been asked all too often how PipeDream selects 
  114. the template (implying that it's from your !PipeDream.Templates 
  115. directory) which is displayed when you click Select.  The short answer 
  116. is "None of them"!  The longer answer is that the file which is loaded 
  117. is [!PipeDream.Choices] complete with all the choices it contains.

  119. Similarly, if you drag a file having a Text format (such as the 
  120. [0thReadMe] file from this disc) or a CSV file onto the PipeDream icon 
  121. then the file will be loaded by PipeDream into this default document.  
  122. If you often drag Text or CSV files into PipeDream this way then giving 
  123. some thought to your [Choices] (default) document will be worthwhile.

  125. You can make changes to the [Choices] file and then save the file in 
  126. the usual way (not recommended) or you can make your changes to 
  127. [Choices] and then, from the Choices menu click on the Save choices 
  128. option (better).  In the first case the [Choices] file will be saved 
  129. with most, but not all, of the changes embodied in it; if you use the 
  130. Save choices method then you can be sure that all your choices will be 
  131. saved in [Choices].

  133. Here is a simple exercise which you might find interesting if you've 
  134. never seen it done before.  Place the pointer in the directory 
  135. containing the [Choices] file, click the Menu button, run the pointer 
  136. through Display and click on Full info.  You will see displayed the 
  137. time and date at which [Choices] was last saved.  Click the Menu button 
  138. on the installed PipeDream icon and then click Select on the Save 
  139. choices option.  You will see the time/date stamp of the file [Choices] 
  140. change as the new version is saved.  Whoops!  What was the currently 
  141. selected document at the time you clicked on Save choices?

  144. Options

  146. Load the [Choices] file into PipeDream by clicking on the installed 
  147. PipeDream icon (or by double clicking on the [Choices] file).  Execute 
  148. the command <Ctrl O> to bring up the Options menu.  Now make your 
  149. changes.  I rarely use this 'template' for anything but Text files so 
  150. my selection is:

  184. You may have different requirements from me and so you may choose a 
  185. different set of Options.  If you do need a variety of default 
  186. documents then you should use templates for the variants rather than 
  187. attempt to use a variety of [Choices] file.  You will find examples of 
  188. using templates this way in the Templates1 directory on this disc.

  191. Columns
  192.  
  193. You can save a column structure as part of [Choices].  My selection is 
  194. that I have only one column, Column A, which has a width of 12 
  195. characters (set with <Ctrl W>), and a wrap width (set with <Ctrl H>) of 
  196. 72 characters.

  199. Decimal Places
  200.  
  201. The command <Ctrl LDP> can be set to a default which is different from 
  202. the number of decimal places set from the Options menu.  I set my 
  203. <Ctrl LDP> to 2 decimal places - my <Ctrl O> decimal places is zero.

  206. Printing Options
  207.

  214. I have chosen the System font and a suitable PipeDream printer driver 
  215. (Parallel and HPJet).  Because I am using the PipeDream printer driver 
  216. (with the System font) I set the page length to zero and I set the 
  217. printer to print only one copy to the Printer (rather than to a file).

  220. Dictionaries
  221.  
  222. Through the <Ctrl SO> command you can open those user dictionaries you 
  223. want loaded by default.  I have loaded three of mine.  I think that 
  224. there is a limit of five but I've not tried it recently so I'm not sure 
  225. whether this includes Master or not.  I believe that the facility to 
  226. load your user dictionaries as PipeDream loads to the icon bar is one 
  227. of the most useful features of [Choices].  I have had a lot of trouble 
  228. trying to find the documentation for this feature so, if you can find 
  229. it, then please let me know where it is!

  231. By the way, you need to Create a user dictionary before you can open 
  232. it.  You can not use it until it is opened!
  233.  
  234. The option to Lock dictionaries is nothing to do with making 
  235. dictionaries Read only.  If you Lock a dictionary then you load it into 
  236. memory (RAM) rather than use it from the disc.  Since most people these 
  237. days use PipeDream from a hard disc (rather than a floppy) it is 
  238. probably better to not Lock your dictionaries.  If you are still using 
  239. relatively slow floppies for the PipeDream program (not the data files) 
  240. then there may be some merit in loading the dictionaries into memory 
  241. (if you have enough memory).
  242.  
  243. Finally, you need to Save choices from the icon bar (ie not by saving 
  244. the [Choices] file) if you want to include user dictionaries as part of 
  245. your start up choices.  If you save the [Choices] file then the 
  246. instruction to Open the dictionaries will not be executed.

  249. In Conclusion
  250.  
  251. I have spent perhaps too much time discussing what is contained within 
  252. the [Choices] file.  Remember that, just because an option is stored 
  253. within [Choices] that does not necessarily mean that every document 
  254. will be configured to that option.
  255.  
  256. The choices which do apply to every document are those which appear in 
  257. the Choices menu, accessed from the PipeDream icon (on the icon bar) 
  258. with the menu button.  These are what might be referred to as 'global' 
  259. choices.  The other choices which appear in [Choices] apply only to the 
  260. default PipeDream file loaded by clicking select on the PipeDream icon 
  261. or loaded by dragging Text or CSV files (amongst other types of file) 
  262. to the PipeDream icon.  These are what might be referred to as 'local' 
  263. choices and are the subject of the article in the Templates1 directory.
  264.  
  265. I am not sure if 'Opened dictionaries' is really an exception to the 
  266. rule stated in the above paragraph.  From the Pipedream Choices menu
  267. you can not choose what dictionaries are opened as PipeDream is 
  268. installed.  Although you can choose these only from your default 
  269. document, the choice is shown through the Choices - Dictionaries menu.

  271. If you need a wider range of 'local' file configurations than can be 
  272. achieved with only the one [Choices] document, then you need to learn 
  273. about templates.  There is an article about templates in the Templates1 
  274. directory.  I suggest that you might read that next.

  276. I believe that I have covered everything which can be stored in the 
  277. default [Choices] file (for use in just the [Choices] template or for 
  278. every document) but it is possible that I have missed something.  If I 
  279. have missed something then please let me know and I'll mention it on 
  280. the next PipeLine disc.  If you believe that it would be useful to 
  281. explain in more depth any particular choice of start up options then 
  282. please let me know and please include a copy of your [Choices] file.
